Maharashtra Challenges Central Food Regulator in Bombay High Court

Maharashtra has filed a petition against the Union health ministry and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, alleging the regulator has created a parallel enforcement system and encroached on state powers. The state claims the 2006 Food Safety and Standards Act was meant to decentralise enforcement, but the regulator has appointed central licensing authorities and changed registration limits without public feedback. A hearing is scheduled for November 26.
